Thomas Loewenheim is a modern renaissance man: a unique musician who enjoys an international career, combining cello performance, conducting, and teaching at the highest levels.  He has toured North America, Europe, the Middle East, and the Far East, performing with orchestras, giving recitals, and playing chamber music, and has been broadcast over the national radio networks in Austria, Canada, and Israel.

During the past few years, Dr. Loewenheim has dedicated a large portion of his time for research.  In addition to working on his dissertation “’Elephant or Relevant?’: Reviving Sir Donald Francis Tovey’s Sonata for Violoncello Solo, Op. 30: A Critical Performance Edition Made in Light of an In-Depth Study of the Historical Background and a Musical Analysis”, he has been rediscovering forgotten concerti from the Romantic era, some of which have never been recorded before.

Dr. Loewenheim is currently director of orchestras and professor of cello at the California State University, Fresno, and the music director and conductor of the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Youth Orchestras of Fresno.  Previously he taught at the Indiana University String Academy and the Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN), and served as music director and conductor of the Musical Arts Youth Orchestra (MAYO) in south-central Indiana.

Highlights from past seasons include performances of the Rococo Variations by Tchaikovsky with the International Musical Arts Youth Orchestra (iMAYO) in Indiana, and with the Youth Orchestras of Philharmonic Orchestra Fresno in California.  In addition, performances of the two cello concerti for cello by Haydn, the cello concerto by Boccherini, as well as works for cello and orchestra by Davidoff, Goltermann, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, and Weber were performed with chamber orchestras in Canada, the United Stated, and in Israel.

Dr. Loewenheim has also frequently performed as recitalist and collaborated in chamber music concert around the world, in addition to concerts featuring him as the conductor of the Fresno State Symphony Orchestra and the Youth Orchestras of Fresno Philharmonic Orchestra among others.

The domain name, cellosuite.com, represents Dr. Loewenheim's dedication to the unaccompanied cello literature, which has resulted in several compositions written for him.  Recently, he has been making exciting discoveries in the early 20th-century unaccompanied cello repertoire and is incorporating the results into his recitals.

In addition to his accomplishments as a performer and conductor, Dr. Loewenheim is establishing an increasingly prominent reputation as a teacher, and is frequently invited to give master classes around Canada, the United States, and Israel, and in Hong Kong.
